Why Great Communicators Break the Golden Rule

Most of us grew up hearing the Golden Rule: treat others the way you want to be treated.
It’s great advice… until you’re trying to lead, influence, or communicate with people who are nothing like you.

In this engaging, fast-paced session, Janelle Burnheimer will unpack why effective leaders actually do the opposite, they communicate the way others need to hear it. Using the DISC framework, attendees will learn how different behavioral styles process information, make decisions, respond under pressure, and prefer to be led.

During this 30–45 minute workshop, attendees will:

  • Explore the four primary DISC styles and what motivates each one

  • Learn why the Golden Rule can unintentionally create friction, misalignment, and missed expectations

  • Practice simple, practical adjustments to communicate with more clarity, confidence, and impact

  • Walk away with strategies they can use immediately in conversations with colleagues, clients, and even at home

This session is fun, interactive, and highly relatable, especially for women navigating leadership, influence, and collaboration in today’s workplace. Attendees will leave with a deeper understanding of themselves, a clearer way to read others, and a practical toolkit for strengthening relationships through tailored communication.
